The pattern includes 36 pages of step-by-step instructions with plenty of colour photographs to help you through each step. Also included in the PDF pattern are printable pattern pieces for your home printer.
The following files will all be included with your PDF pattern purchase:
- SVG files (for Cricut Maker, Brother Scan N Cut & Silhouette)
- A0 size (for printing at your local copy shop - if you do not wish to tape together the pattern pages included in the PDF pattern, OR to use with a home projector to cut out fabric).
NOTE:
- Instructions are provided for both the 'Birthed Bag' method and the 'Drop-In Lining' method. I would recommend using the 'Drop-In Lining' method if you are working with thicker materials.
- This pattern does not include information on leather materials, such as the type and thickness of leather to use, skiving instructions, or other leather preparation and sewing details. You will need to consult additional resources or use your own expertise for these aspects.
- The Scottie Convertible Bag is designed to be a slouchy bag, so I recommend using fabric that is thin, soft, and drapey. Suitable options include thin vinyl, leather, or woven fabrics like cotton, denim, home decor fabric, or lightweight canvas. I do not recommend using cork for the bag's exterior, as its stiffness can prevent achieving the desired slouchy look and impact the overall style. Whatever fabric you choose, ensure your sewing machine can handle it and sew at least 3-4 layers smoothly. The bag can be sewn on a domestic machine, depending on the materials you use. Be mindful that all machines have limitations, so it's crucial to know your machine's capabilities!
- Even if you choose woven fabric for the exterior, you will need a non-fraying material like vinyl or leather for the Shoulder Strap, Crossbody Strap, Zipper Overlay, Zip End Tab, Strap Ends, and Slip Pocket Trim. The method used for the straps involves exposed raw edges to keep them thin and reduce bulk around the sliders, making it easier to convert from a crossbody to a backpack or vice versa. Since the edges of all these pieces are left raw, you can use leather edge paint to give them a more professional look. Instructions for edge painting are not provided in the pattern.
- For the lining fabric, you can use cotton quilt fabric or lightweight waterproof canvas.
- The Crossbody Strap has a joint, meaning two strap pieces are sewn together to create one long strap with a length of 86". If you prefer to use webbing instead of sewing the strap, use 1" wide webbing and cut it to 86" long. Note that webbing is not listed in the pattern.
- I have provided an optional add-on for the Strap Tab in the pattern, which is attached to the Crossbody Strap. While this feature is not essential, it is highly recommended if you plan to use the bag as a backpack. Riveted at the center of the Crossbody Strap, it serves as a permanent addition that simplifies the process of finding the center when wearing the bag in backpack mode.
